THE

story

As QUT creative industries students we were tasked with creating an innovative solution to BRISBANE OPEN HOUSE’s current issues that have arisen due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. Brisbane open house described their main issues as both a lack of visitors due to covid and a shortage of younger audiences. We are answering Brisbane Open House’s provocation by presenting a socially distanced event that also broadens their target audience by involving a younger demographic. Our target audience for this project is aimed at young adults who are thrill seekers or horror fanatics between 18- 25 years old.

Our aim is to create an interactive crime app which can be used to explore and learn about the crimes that have occured in historical buildings around Brisbane. Our prototype will include two horror themed precincts including Boggo Road Gaol and the Old Windmill in Brisbane City. The app will involve solving and learning about the crimes and horrors that happened in these buildings. The project for ‘Brisbane Open House’ will be prototyped onto a new BOH app specifically designed for the crime that’s taken place where customers will download it for free and interact with the chosen landmarks. Customers of BOH will act as investigators and begin to understand what has happened

in these buildings as well as interacting with polls and clues while walking inside the precinct. Whilst completing tasks, mini drama performances will be conducted such as arrests, murders, trials and ominous screams to further emphasis on the theatrical interactive environment. There will also be opportunities for customers who book in to get the ultimate tour at these selected landmarks which in the case for Boggo Road Gaol, BOH will collaborate and join forces with the regular ghost tours that take place in this location.

Journey

THE

Throughout our project process we have utilised tumblr to keep track of our thoughts and development;

During week 5 workshop activities, we started brainstorming together as a group and finally decided on our 3 main projects that we think will be worth considering as out final project for BOH.

1. Scavenger hunt around historical buildings.

2. AR application for mobile phones that could allow users to view and experience historical buildings virtually.

3. Holiday themed events (Easter, Halloween, Christmas etc.) at certain historical location and buildings.

After much discussion in Week 6, the team has decided to settle with the idea of creating an interactive app, at the same time, the app allows user to explore and learn about the historical buildings around Brisbane.

The team have decided to do 2 crime themed destinations The Old Windmill, Brisbane and Allison Baden clay for the application, but this can also be expanded on to include celebrity, musician, etc destinations in near future.

Originally, our project was predicted to evolve one of three ways. Through an in person scavenger hunt, an AR application/ app or themed holiday events catered specifically in BOH’s historic buildings. In the end we evaluated our options and their feasibility and decided on an application program that incorporates elements of all three ideas. Specifically, we decided that the holiday events can still be held in conjunction with the app program and that the basis of the adventure would be have a scavenger hunt dynamic. This resulted in a creative app that focuses on the journey of a crime but can easily be expanded beyond that.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Our target audience for this project is aimed at young adults who are thrill seekers or horror fanatics between 18- 25 years old.

THE future

THE future

Our BOH mystery app can be evolved over time to include a larger variety of activities and venues. Ideally the underlying principle of our app can be evolved to multiple scenarios. Possible expansions include; Themed events during Christmas, Easter and Halloween Tour walkthroughs focused on musicians, actors or athletes instead of horror
